Proteins are high molecular weight polypeptides whose hydrolysis can yield a variety of simple polypeptides. In addition to proteins, there are peptides of varying lengths in nature, which have various special functions. For example, many hormones are non-protein peptides; oxytocin promotes uterine muscle contraction; vasopressin increases blood pressure; calkinin regulates blood pressure; and some antibiotics, such as bacitracin S, are also peptides. The synthesis of a polypeptide is a process in which the carboxyl (or C-terminus) and the amine (or N-terminus) pair up and bind to each other. The protective group is necessary because of the potential for unexpected reactions. Chemical peptide synthesis begins at the C-end and ends at the N-end of the peptide, while protein biosynthesis, on the contrary, begins at the N-end and ends at the C-end of the peptide.
